My first 6 weeks on Wegovy 0.25mg: my honest experience

This post is not sponsored and contains no affiliate links. It is simply my personal experience of taking prescribed Wegovy so far. Everyone responds differently, so speak to your prescriber if you experience side effects or have concerns.

I’ve now been taking Wegovy for around six weeks. I started on the lowest dose of 0.25mg and have stayed on the same dose for my second month. I’m having the injection through Boots Online Doctor.

This isn’t going to be a highly scientific explanation of how Wegovy works. There are plenty of medical websites that can do that much better than I can. I just wanted to explain what taking it has actually been like for me: what has happened to my appetite, what I can eat now, the mistakes I made during the first few weeks and the things I strangely no longer enjoy as much.

The biggest change hasn’t been that I suddenly dislike food. I still enjoy food. I just seem to reach a point after a few mouthfuls where I feel satisfied and don’t want any more.

The quick version after six weeks

On a normal day, I’d estimate that Wegovy has reduced the amount I eat by around 50%.

My portions are much smaller. I rarely finish a full restaurant meal and food lasts much longer. I still crave chocolate around my period, but instead of eating an entire bar within an hour, I’ll have one or two rows a day.

I have felt sick and I was actually sick a few times during the first few weeks, mainly because I attempted to eat the same portions I would have eaten before Wegovy.

The injection itself has been completely fine. I inject it into my belly and only feel a small pinch.

How much less am I eating on Wegovy?

My portion sizes have reduced massively.

Before Wegovy, I might have made myself a normal-sized wrap for lunch, filled it to the brim and covered everything in cheese, sauce and mayonnaise. Now, I probably wouldn’t even finish a small wrap with a few tiny blobs of mayonnaise in it.

Most of the time, I eat around half of my dinner and then save the rest. It might become a larger snack later in the day, my tea that evening or even the following day’s dinner.

That is probably the strangest change for me. Before, I would have considered half a wrap to be barely anything. Now I can eat it, feel satisfied and genuinely not want the rest.

I don’t necessarily feel completely full. It is more like my brain suddenly decides, “Yes, that was nice. That’s enough now.”

A photo of my reduced lunch size - rana pasta, and fake chicken pieces
Hand for scale! I always use a small plate now. This is rana spinach pasta (tortelloni?) with fake chicken pieces in a mascarpone sauce with cheese on top. I didn’t finish it. It was for dinner/lunch.

Weekend takeaway – my normal order is veggie tikka masala with garlic naan and 2-3 poppadoms. I’d usually halve both the tub of masala and naan and have the other half for lunch the next day. So for my first curry since starting, I ate 1/3 naan and 1/3 curry. I had 1 poppadom with the curry then another later on that evening. The next day for lunch, I had about half of what was left – so another third each. And finally I had the rest for tea. So it did 3 meals instead of 2.

My burger and cider mistake

During the first few weeks, I was sick a few times after eating too much in one sitting.

On Fridays, I used to love having a burger, chips and a fruity cider. On the second day of my first week on Wegovy, I decided that skipping the chips and drinking the cider after my burger – rather than with it – would surely be sufficient.

Ha. It was not sufficient.

I ate the entire burger when, looking back, I probably should have eaten about a third of it.

Around 30 minutes later, I started drinking the cider. Within about ten minutes, I sicked the whole lot back up.

It was awful at the time, but it taught me a fairly important lesson about my new portion size. Wegovy wasn’t going to stop me from physically eating the burger, but my stomach clearly wasn’t happy about receiving the amount of food I used to put into it.

Since then, I’ve become much better at stopping early rather than waiting until I feel uncomfortably full.

Does Wegovy make me feel sick?

I sometimes start to feel sick at around 1.30pm if I haven’t eaten lunch yet.

I normally finish breakfast at around 10am. Before taking Wegovy, I would usually have at least a mouthful of a protein bar between breakfast and lunch. Now that my appetite is lower, it is quite easy to carry on working and forget that I haven’t eaten anything.

The nausea seems to be my reminder.

It isn’t necessarily because I have eaten something bad or eaten too much. Sometimes it appears to happen because I have left it too long between eating.

This has made me realise that having a smaller appetite doesn’t mean I should completely ignore food until I start feeling ill. I still need to eat; the amounts are just different now.

Wegovy hasn’t stopped my period cravings

My appetite is noticeably different during my luteal phase and period.

On normal days, I’d estimate that I eat around 50% of what I used to. During my luteal phase and period, that probably increases to around 70–80% of my previous intake.

My weight on the scales also tends to stay flat or increase slightly during those weeks.

Wegovy hasn’t magically removed my usual hormonal appetite changes. I still feel hungrier and I still crave chocolate.

The difference is that the cravings are much easier to satisfy with a smaller amount.

Previously, I could eat an entire chocolate bar within an hour. Now I’ll normally have one or two rows a day. The chocolate lasts much longer, but I still get to enjoy it.

I actually prefer that to feeling like I’m not allowed to have chocolate at all. I haven’t completely cut out the foods I like; I just don’t seem to need as much of them.

Cider is the thing that has changed the most

One of the biggest (and saddest) changes has been cider.

I used to love having a can or two of Kopparberg fruity cider non-alc at the weekend. Now I don’t enjoy it anywhere near as much.

It is very sugary and fizzy, which seems to be a particularly bad combination for my stomach while I’m taking Wegovy. I could finish a can without being sick, but it would take me a long time and I probably wouldn’t particularly enjoy doing it.

I’m also much more conscious of drinks taking up valuable space in my stomach now.

If I’m eating a meal, I don’t want to fill myself up with a large drink and then discover I only have room for two mouthfuls of food. It’s a very strange thing to suddenly have to consider.

Eating out feels completely different

It is very noticeable when I eat in pubs or restaurants now because I rarely finish everything on my plate.

I’ve started ordering more salads because I can eat more of them without becoming full as quickly as I would with a bread roll, burger or sandwich.

I still enjoy going out for food, but I have had to get used to leaving quite a lot behind. Previously, I would usually continue eating simply because the food was there and tasted nice.

Now there is a very definite point where I’m done. Even if the food still tastes good, I don’t particularly want another mouthful.

I’m trying to become better at ordering smaller meals where possible, rather than ordering what I used to eat and leaving most of it.

Even my bedtime cereal has changed

Before bed, I used to love having a huge bowl of sugary cereal with oat milk.

Would I sometimes go back for more? Yes, I absolutely would.

I still enjoy having cereal now, but the serving size is completely different. Instead of filling a large bowl, I put a small handful of cereal into a mug.

That is enough.

A mug of cereal would previously have felt almost insulting, but now I get the taste and enjoyment without needing a huge bowl of it.

This is probably the best example of how Wegovy feels for me. I haven’t stopped enjoying my favourite foods. The amount required to make me happy has just become much smaller.

How much weight have I lost?

I’m a 39-year-old, 5’8 female who loves cardio and lifting weights. I’ll never be petite, and I’m happy to stay curvy. My aim was to feel happy and comfortable in clothes again, instead of feeling like shit because they’re getting tighter.

I lost the most in the first 2 weeks. I started at 90kg. My aim is to reach 80kg and see how I feel. After 6 weeks, I’m at 84.8kg (a loss of 5.2kg!). I weigh myself every Friday morning. I haven’t consistently lost weight; some weeks it’s increased (mostly around luteal/period).

I’ve tried to keep to weighing myself every Friday morning but sometimes I can’t resist. These pics are from the Garmin app which I use to log my weight.

What does the Wegovy injection feel like?

I don’t mind the injection at all.

The needle is tiny. I inject it into the fat on my stomach and normally only feel a little pinch.

The thought of giving myself an injection was much worse than actually doing it. Once I had completed the first one, I realised it wasn’t something I needed to dread every week.

Obviously, this is only my own experience. Some people may be more uncomfortable with needles, but the injection itself has been one of the easiest parts for me.

How much did my Wegovy cost from Boots Online Doctor?

I ordered my Wegovy through Boots Online Doctor.

I used a discount code for my first order, which reduced the price to £68 for one month of the 0.25mg dose. This included four weekly injections.

My second order, also at 0.25mg, cost £84. Prices increase as you increase the mg – from memory, the next one up (0.5mg) was around £120 (hence why I’m going to stay on the minimum for as long as possible!)

My honest thoughts after six weeks

So far, Wegovy has changed my relationship with portion sizes more than it has changed the types of food I enjoy.

I still eat chocolate. I still eat cereal. I still go to pubs and restaurants. I haven’t suddenly become someone who only wants vegetables and protein.

The main difference is that I can have a smaller amount and feel genuinely satisfied by it.

There have been unpleasant moments. Being sick after the burger and cider was horrible, and feeling sick because I have forgotten to eat isn’t enjoyable either. I wouldn’t say that my first six weeks have been free from side effects.

However, I’ve started to understand what my stomach can manage. I eat more slowly, stop much earlier and don’t assume that I can still eat the portions I had before starting Wegovy.

I’m only around a month and a half into taking it, so this is very much an early update rather than my final verdict. I’ll update this post as I continue, particularly if my appetite, side effects or experience changes on a different dose.
